Ignoring midichlorians as a weird simulacrum of thetans the force does have a reasonable explanation. One that is better placed in reality. Midichlorians could even be a protein/ RNA that is measured in Star Wars.
The force has been twisted into this weird kind of plot Armour for lazy writing in “the force awakens, the last jedi and episode IX”. Every one can use it if you try really hard. Or you could look at it as it was in the original trilogy. Even the the prequels got this right as a modestly predictable and inheritable trait. So what have the new movies gotten wrong.
Simply put the issue is that all evidence from the first six movies show that the force is something that appears in children of force users or those with force users in their lineage. Whether they are sith or jedi is irrelevant. More importantly it is a group that is dwindling in size. This again raises questions of why and how?
Looking at the family trees that are known there is plenty of evidence. The strongest case to be made is that of a recessive allele. Every one who has force powers either comes from a force user and their suspected force sensitive parent or parents who have made significant achievements through pure will power (or subconscious force powers).
But that is not the only thing to come of out of the force.
Whilst inheriting the force positive genes is not the only option it is is the most likely and compelling. Random mutation may account for a small fraction of the gene spread. Their may even be rare lineages with a dominant version of the allele but these will both only account for a limited amount of the known and unknown force users. More so when the spread of this across many species over the galaxy is considered.
