Beethoven completed this sonata in 1812, with the premiere performance taking place the same year with French violinist Pierre Rode playing the violin, whom the work was composed for. This would be the final violin sonata Beethoven would compose.

The work is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro moderato
II. Adagio espressivo
III. Scherzo: Allegro – Trio
IV. Poco allegretto
