A Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) crew blasted apart one of the boulders that damaged a section of Highway 145 on Sunday, May 26. The 2.5-million-pound rock tumbled onto the two-lane highway between Cortez and Telluride from a ridgeline some 1,000 feet up on Friday, May 24, CDOT said. Trucks removed the rock fragments after the explosion, opening up a temporary road to traffic. CDOT said that a second boulder, which created an eight-foot trench across both lanes and landed on the east side of the road, might have to remain where it sits.
