String Sextet in G major, Op. 36 by Johannes Brahms
Brahms completed this sextet for two violins, two violas and two celli in 1865, with the premiere performance taking place in October of 1866 in Boston, Massachusetts. The European premiere of the work would occur in November of 1866 in Zurich.
In 1859, Brahms would become engaged to Agathe von Siebold, a German soprano. While it is clear from their correspondence that Brahms loved Agathe dearly, the engagement would be called off some time in 1861. Brahms included a reference to Agathe in the first movement of this sextet, with the note progression ‘a-g-a-h-e’ present in bars 162-168.
This work is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro non troppo
II. Scherzo – Allegro non troppo – Presto giocoso
III. Adagio
IV. Poco allegro
