Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth (Matthew 5:5).
This Beatitude challenges our typical understanding of strength. True meekness isn't about weakness or timidity; it's about inner strength under control, choosing humility and gentleness over aggression.
When we think of a meek person, we imagine a weakling, a pushover.
However, the original Greek word translated as "meek" is "praus," which carries a richer meaning than mere weakness. It suggests gentleness, humility, and inner strength under control. It's like a powerful wild horse, tamed and guided by a wise rider.
The idea aligns with Psalm 37:11: "the meek shall inherit the land and delight in abundant prosperity." True fulfillment comes from aligning with God's strength and will, not human might and self-assertion.
Meekness isn't passive. It takes strength to resist aggression, forgive, and choose peace.
As President Theodore Roosevelt famously said, "Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far." This quote, often misattributed to John F. Kennedy, encapsulates a foreign policy approach that prioritizes diplomacy and peaceful resolution while maintaining strong military power as a deterrent.
Roosevelt's approach, though not directly referencing the Beatitudes, can be seen as a modern example of its principles. It embodies the idea of inner strength and power held in reserve, prioritizing peaceful solutions through communication and diplomacy ("speak softly") while demonstrating the capability and resolve to use force if necessary ("carry a big stick").
This measured approach aligns with the concept of meekness not as weakness, but as controlled power used with humility and discretion. It emphasizes the importance of seeking peaceful solutions while acknowledging the need for strength and preparedness in a complex world.
Are you willing to embrace meekness and inherit the earth? It's a journey of self-reflection, humility, and trusting God's power and act in peace.
