Schubert completed this work for piano and violin in 1826, with the premiere performance taking place in 1827 in Vienna. Schubert had composed the work specifically to be performed by Czech violinist Josef Slavik, and it was indeed Slavik on the violin for the premiere in 1827. It would sadly be one of the final works for chamber ensemble that Schubert would compose before his death in 1828.
