Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3k) is a cult comedy program that started on Minneapolis local TV in the late 1980s before going national on a couple of cable TV networks for a decade, ending, then being revived on a streaming service in recent years. The premise is nicely explained in the opening theme, including the fact that the framing story isn't meant to be taken too seriously. It's just an excuse to watch, and make fun of, old, bad movies.
The bad movie riffed-on in this 1991 episode was GODZILLA VS. THE SEA MONSTER. Aka EBIRAH, HORROR OF THE DEEP, and GODZILLA VS EBIRAH, from 1966. Originally, this was supposed to be a King Kong movie. A follow-up to KING KONG VS GODZILLA and a tie-in with the Rankin/Bass animated KING KONG series. (The pilot of which I recently posted.) But Toho and Rankin/Bass decided to save the big ape for KING KONG ESCAPES the following year, and brought in Godzilla for a last-minute substitution in this film.
Notice that Godzilla is powered-up by electricity, like Kong was in his first Toho film. Godzilla also seems to care about a human girl, which is obviously a Kong thing. This movie furthered Godzilla's face-turn into a Good Guy after his tentative truce with humanity established in his previous two outings saving the Earth from King Ghidorah.
