A video from my Elkhart, IN seminar showing how we teach reactive dogs to create space. We do this with almost every dog that comes through our training program, and we have found a ton of success with it. The most important thing to note about this whole protocol though is step number one: the punisher. I first had to stop this dog from aggressing toward another dog the moment it felt uncomfortable. I made it clear to the dog in a way it understands that the act of lunging, barking, and growling at other dogs is not acceptable behavior. I eliminated the arousal by bonking the dog, and then we were able to start working in very low levels on the remote collar. I taught the dog to create space instead of conflict, and I also showed it that it does have the option to just move away if it wants. We advocate for both dogs in this situation. We have seen lots of dogs not only learn proper social skills through this protocol, but they end up enjoying interacting with other dogs as well. They were just never taught how to properly do so. This step is the very early stage of the dog aggression rehab process, and it looks this way for 99% of dogs we deal with.
