President Trump Holds Press Conference After Meeting With Mitch McConnell & Republicans 1/9/19
President Trump Press Conference After Meeting With Republicans 1/9/19. President Trump tells reporters at the U.S. Capitol that Senate Republicans are “unified” behind him as he seeks border security funding before ending the government shutdown. After an extended photo op in the Oval Office Monday morning, Trump traveled to Capitol Hill, where he briefly spoke to reporters before attending the Republican policy luncheon. On the Capitol steps, he claimed that “Democrats are losing a lot of support” over the border wall shutdown fight, and that “Last night was a big victory for the Republicans.” “Many of those people that you’re talking about — so humanly the way you express it — but many of those people that you talk about are on my side,” the president said after a reporter asked him about federal employees who have been furloughed or are being forced to without compensation. “I’ve had so many people, the beautiful thing is with social media, the world can write to you, and you take a look at social media, and so many of those people are saying, ‘It’s very hard for me, it’s very hard for my family, but Mr. President, you’re doing the right thing. Get it done.'”
President Donald Trump told reporters that the GOP will not crack in the shutdown fight.
Speaking briefly on Capitol Hill after meeting with Congressional Republicans, the president responded to a query about whether his part cohorts want him to pursue a different strategy in his fight for a Southern border wall.
“We talked about strategy,” Trump said. “But they’re with us all the way.”
He added, “I just want to tell you that the Republicans are totally unified. Now, if you were to ask the same question to the Democrats, you let me know in some of those districts where I won, or that are a little bit more towards sanity, you want them to run, say ‘We don’t want to have border sec?’ You’ve got plenty of Democrats that don’t want to be in this battle…The Republicans are unified.”
