Brahms completed this quartet for piano, violin, viola and cello in 1861 with the premiere performance being given in November of 1863 in Vienna. Brahms himself would play the piano at the premiere performance. This is the longest work for chamber ensemble Brahms would compose.

This quartet is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro non troppo
II. Poco adagio
III. Scherzo: Poco allegro
IV. Finale: Allegro
