Ratropolis , Real Time Strategy Deck Builder with Cute Mice!
Disclosure: This game copy was bought by the reviewer.
Defend your little kingdom of mice from the undead, weasels, and raptors while building up a respectable economy and army! Four leaders are currently available, each with unlockable cards that will get added to the overall card pull and offer new actions/units to hopefully get the edge over the enemy. Cute visuals, decent sound design, and random events that can either help or damn your village to oblivion.
I would like to say this game has that "one more round" feeling to it during the opening waves, but the sooner you get into the upper 10s, low 20s waves, the balancing issues and luck oriented structure of play make their ugly appearance. The game has over 120 cards with most either being useless or feeling like filler to keep the three branches (economy, military, building) sections relatively even. The economy cards and building cards offer great items to keep your kingdom growing at a steady rate and advisers offer some powerful utilities to make things easier as well. The problems start to show up when the enemies evolve from the undead to the weasels, especially noticeable with the raptors. Regardless of how many units you have, the clear power advantage between your units and the swarm of enemies can wipe you out without a moments notice. Add this to the limited population, slow redraw rate, clutter of your deck at this point (invest in removing cards), and the hectic real time mechanics, and you simply cannot recover. What is worse is the inability for your units to save your losing side. If all your walls are struck down on one side, your units cannot move to reinforce it. There just isn't much outside getting lucky with adviser draws or using the General to get an increase to your unit's base stats to survive late game. Upgrading cards can help mid game, but the swarm in the final stretch just demolish anything. You will be playing plenty of losing rounds just to get that right combination of ca..
