We can model multiplication comparisons by using a bar model to represent the two quantities. We can also use a quick drawing of little circles or tally marks to represent the two quantities. A variable is a letter of the alphabet that takes the place of an unknown amount. We can use variables to write an equation. An additive comparison uses addition and a multiplicative comparison uses multiplication. We show several examples of using bar models to help us solve problems. We write an equation for a given comparison statement, and we write a comparison statement for a given equation. We can make our bar models in any order because the Commutative Property states that we can multiply two factors in any order and get the same product.
