Truthinscripture.org Pastor Rick Kabrick Commentary on the Book of 1 Corinthians CH 9.
The Corinthians argue that since they know idols don't truly exist, as true GODs, and that only the one true GOD is real, why does it matter if they eat the meat or not?
8:13, Therefore, if food causes my brother to stumble, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause my brother to stumble.
Paul asks them to let go of their right to eat meat sacrificed to idols, even as he has let go his own rights as an apostle. Paul will also use the occasion to defend his position as an Apostle. Flex a little muscle as one commentator put it.
A very important point for believers today. If you as a believer have no weakness in an area that you know another believer has a weakness in…you don’t flaunt that, abuse that etc. And we could come up with many examples.
Am I not free?Have I not seen Jesus Christ our LORD? Are you not my work in the LORD?
GAL 5:9, This false teaching is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough! I am trusting the Lord to keep you from believing false teachings. God will judge that person, whoever he is, who has been confusing you.
An allegory is a picture that can be interpreted as revealing a hidden meaning, typically a moral or spiritual or even a political one.
“We must not make the mistake of thinking that Paul means to explain that commandment allegorically; for some empty-headed creatures make this an excuse for turning everything into allegory, so that they change dogs into men, trees into angels, and convert the whole of Scripture into an amusing game.”
Here we see Paul’s real heart. Paid or not paid, it did not matter to him. What mattered was the work of the Gospel.
Paul was happy to distance himself from these by never taking an offering so no one would think he might abuse [his] authority in the Gospel.
In ACT 21:23-26, Paul participated in Jewish purification ceremonies, which he knew were not necessary for his own life, but he hoped would help build a bridge for the Jews that would lead them to the Gospel.
Paul sought to win people to Yeshua by being sensitive to their needs and identifying with them. We could do well by doing the same. However, we are NOT to compromise the truth for the sake of impressing or winning favor of others.
1 COR 9:22, To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak; I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means save some.
So, there must be a balance. For Paul it was not to get money, influence, or honor, but to save SOULS! And notice that Paul was willing to offend people over the Gospel, but he wanted to offend them only over the Gospel.
These prosperity preachers all seem to promise that if you send them your money GOD will bless you.Well, we need to give of our time, treasure, talent. Paul will tell us in 2 COR 9 that GOD loves a cheerful giver.
GOD doesn’t need your money. GOD allows you to have HIM use your money to glorify HIM.
The silver is mine and the gold is mine,’ declares the LORD Almighty.
Prizes for the victors were an important part of Greek athletics. The word athletics BTW comes from the Greek word athlon which means the winners prize.
Cities in fact competed to offer the highest prizes. With the games in Athens being the most profitable but Corinth had like the #2 games.
This was especially meaningful to the Corinthians, because their city was one of the places that held the games necessary for one to win to go to the ancient Olympics held in Athens.
Paul may not have been able to participate in sports of his day. Perhaps his stature, his religious upbringing, whatever. However, Paul loves to write about sports analogies and references athletics many times.
Discipline is a very weak translation. The Greek word is hupo pu odd zo and means to beat to bruise to make black and blue. One Greek scholar said “to strike under the eye; to give a black eye.”
Usually, these Christians think that this is glorifying GOD. It is not, it in fact mocks the work of Yeshua on the Cross.Because really they are refusing to recognize that Yeshua paid all of the penalty of their sin.
