Orion may seem very peaceful on a cold winter night, but in reality it holds very massive, luminous stars that are destroying the dusty gas cloud from which they formed.

Eventually, the cloud of material will disperse and the Orion Nebula will fade from our sky. Did you know it took about 1,300 years for the light you see to travel from Orion to the Earth? You have couple months left this winter to see Orion as it moves to the western sky and disappears from view.

This timelapse was captured recently in Joshua Tree National Park using an astro-modified camera. The red/pink areas are hydrogen gas that is glowing due to the ionization from energy in the local stars. The large yellow star is Betelgeuse and will likely explode and become a supernova in the next 100,000 years… after which it will be visible during our daytime sky!
