4th Grade Math 1.6, Add Whole Numbers with Regrouping, Renaming

We can add whole numbers by aligning the digits by place value, then adding from right to left. We first add the Ones, then the Tens, then the Hundreds, Etc. We regroup when necessary. We can turn our school paper sideways to line up our place values using the lines on the paper. We must add or subtract the correct digits that are in the correct place values. When adding a column (place value) and the sum is 10 or greater, we regroup the left digit to the next greatest place value. We can only write one digit for each place value sum. We show an example of solving a word problem using a place value chart to add numbers in the hundred thousands. We can estimate to tell whether an answer is reasonable. To estimate a sum, we round each addend first. We add two addends together and then estimate the addends to see if our estimate is close to our actual sum. We do abstract reasoning and find the missing number and name the property we used to find it. We solve a word problem using a table of information to add three digits, then estimate the sum to see if our answer is reasonable. We add compatible numbers first. We solve a multi-step word problem involving addition with regrouping.
