We can round numbers to a certain place value by using a number line, or by using the digit to the right. Rounding rule: If the digit to the right is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, our number stays the same. If the digit to the right is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, or number goes up by one more. We can underline the digit in the place-value we are rounding to help us identify which number we are working with. An estimate tells us about how many or about how much. It's close to an exact amount. We can round a number to find an estimate. We can use a number line to help us estimate to a certain place-value. Knowing where a halfway point is can help us find which number we are closer to. If it's to the right of the halfway point it's closer to the greater number, if it's left of the halfway point it is closer to the lesser number. We solve a word problem involving addition and rounding the sum. We show the difference of rounding the amounts before getting a sum compared to rounding the sum. We discuss benchmarks and how they can help us estimate an amount.
