The years went by and now Shay is a teenager and yet the ship's computer, or Mom, still refuses to acknowledge the fact that he's not a little kid anymore. Everyday is the same: a bland cereal for breakfast followed by childish "missions" promising an adventure, but turn out to be letdowns followed by whatever bland food paste is for lunch and dinner followed by bedtime. Poor Shay has had enough of ice cream avalanches, gift giving space funguses, and hug attacks from his Yarn Pals so while on a runaway train, he puts the Bridge man back to sleep allowing the train to fall into Spike Canyon. For once, Shay is happy and laughing. Fortunately or unfortunately depending on how you look at it, the spikes of Spike Canyon turn out to be made from bouncy Styrofoam. Impressed by Shay's reckless abandon for safety, a Wolf approaches him with an opportunity to face real danger, but they must meet again in an undisclosed location alone and Shay must tell no one. He gives Shay a key and then disappears. Shay is brought to his room for an early bedtime and all missions are cancelled until further notice while he is forced to recover despite him not actually being hurt. He wakes up in the middle of the night and for the first time in his life, he has control.
