The student song was written by Rudolf Baumbach (1840-1905) in 1877 and set to music by Franz Wilhelm Abt (1819-1885) in 1878.
The famous landlady and collector of student songs, Ännchen Schumacher (1860-1935) from Bad Godesberg, was responsible for the spread and popularity of the song.
She is generally identified with the linden landlady. Next to the "Gasthof zum Godesberg", which Aennchen Schuhmacher inherited at the age of 18, stood a linden tree.
The tavern was a meeting place for the local students and the young landlady was very popular with them. Aennchen Schumacher renamed her inn to “Zur Lindenwirtin” in 1891.
She was very musical, wrote down the songs that were sung in the tavern and even brought out a small songbook in 1903, which was later also called "Aennchen's songbook".
On her 75th birthday, shortly before her death, around 5,000 greeting cards arrived from all over the world, many only addressed with “Aennchen in Deutschland”, and even the former German Emperor Wilhelm II came to congratulate. On that day she was made an honorary citizen of Bad Godesberg.
Today a street, a square and a gourmet restaurant in Bonn – Bad Godesberg are named after her.
1. Keinen Tropfen im Becher mehr
Und der Beutel schlaff und leer,
Lechzend Herz und Zunge,
Angetan hat mir's der Wein,
Deiner Äugelein heller Schein
Lindenwirtin, du junge!
2. "Angekreidet wird hier nicht,
Weil's an Kreide uns gebricht,"
Lacht die Wirtin heiter.
"Hast du keinen Heller mehr,
Gib zum Pfand dein Ränzel her,
Aber trinke weiter!"
3. Tauscht der Bursch sein Ränzel ein
Gegen einen Krug voll Wein,
Tät zum Gehn sich wenden.
Spricht die Wirtin: "Junges Blut,
Hast ja Mantel, Stab und Hut;
rink und laß dich pfänden!"
4. Da vertrank der Wanderknab
Mantel, Hut und Wanderstab,
Sprach betrübt: "Ich scheide.
Fahre wohl, du kühler Trank,
Lindenwirtin jung und schlank,
Liebliche Augenweide!"
5. Spricht zu ihm das schöne Weib:
"Hast ja noch ein Herz im Leib,
Laß mir’s, trauter Wandrer!"
Was geschah, ich tu's euch kund:
Auf der Wirtin rotem Mund
Brannte heiß ein andrer!
6. Der dies neue Lied erdacht,
Sang's in einer Sommernacht
Lustig in die Winde.
Vor ihm stund ein volles Glas,
Neben ihm Frau Wirtin saß
Unter der blühenden Linde.
English:
1. No more drop is in the mug
And the purse is limp and empty
Thirsty are heart and tongue,
I like the wine very much,
and your bright eyes, too
Linden landlady, you young one!
2. "There is no chalking up allowed here,
Because we lack of chalk,"
The landlady laughs cheerfully.
"If you don't have any more pennies,
Give me your satchel as a deposit,
But keep on drinking!"
3. Then the lad exchanges his satchel
for a jug full of wine,
And turned to go.
Said the landlady: "Young blood,
You still have a coat, walking stick and hat;
So drink, and get pawned!"
4. Then the traveling boy
drank his coat, hat and walking stick,
Said sadly: "I will leave now.
Fare well, you cool drink,
Linden landlady young and slim,
Lovely eye candy!"
5. Says the beautiful woman to him:
"You still have a heart in your body,
Leave it to me, dear wanderer!"
What happened, I'll tell it to you:
The landlady's red mouth
Another lad kissed hot!
6. The one who invented this new song,
Sang it on a summer night
Cheerfully into the wind.
There was a full glass in front of him,
Next to him sat the landlady
Under the blossoming linden tree.
