If we turn our attention back to Prince Philip’s speech on People and Nature at the United Nations (UN) in 1990, he continues to explicitly state his views on population:
“It must be obvious by now that further population growth in any country is undesirable” (p.388).
Philip continues:
“Popular concern for the environment concentrates on the protection of those elements in nature that benefit people, or on which people depend for their comfort and amusement. The conservation of nature, on the other hand, involves the protection of wild species of plants and animals and their natural habitats from human exploitation and disturbance” (p.388).
Philip then noted that the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) promotes family planning:
“I have no doubt that the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is concerned about the conservation of nature, and WWF promotes family planning in its integrated conservationist projects” (p.394).
Finally, Philip quotes a passage on sustainable development from the Brundtland Report, which was produced by an UN-associated group formerly known as the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED):
“Sustainable development requires that the adverse impacts of human activities on the quality of air, water, and other natural elements are minimized so as to sustain the ecosystem’s overall integrity” (p.388).
