Rampart is a mix between puzzle game, action game and strategy game. It was originally developed by Atari for the arcades. The Master System port was developed by Developer Resources. It was published by Tengen and only came out in Europe and Australia. Rampart was also released for Amiga, Atari ST, Game Boy, Game Boy Colour, Mega Drive / Genesis, PC, Lynx, NES, SNES and C64. A Game Gear version was in development, but got cancelled.
The game is about building and defending castles to conquer an isle part by part. You start off by choosing a position for your castle. You will get wall around your castle automatically. After that, the there are several phases. First, you place a given number of cannons inside your walls. After that, the combat phase starts. A fleet of ships draws near and starts firing at your castle. Combat will go on until either all of your cannons or all enemy ships are destroyed. If all ships are destroyed, you have conquered the area and move on to next. Otherwise, you have rebuilt the walls of your castle within a time limit. You get random, Tetris-style pieces of wall, which you place one after the other. You can turn them in 90 degree angles. If you manage to build a cohesive wall around your castle, you can place a number of additional cannons, if you manged to encircle more space (cannons place before get renewed and keep their position). If you fail to complete your wall in time, you loose a continue and need to start the round again.
Later on, additional elements are introduced. Some ships fire shots which scorch the earth, and you cannot place walls on scorched fields. Also, ships reaching the coast will deploy ground-based troops.
