There are two different kinds of equipment available to the average home brewer and distiller. These are the column still and pot still. The former has been explained previously. The latter has not. A pot still differs in its purpose and function.

A pot still is used to make flavoured spirits like scotch, gin and rum. A column still is used to make unflavoured spirits, generally, such as vodka. The mechanism underlying each is similar yet different. So much so that they can only be used in a particular production line.
