A National Guard helicopter crew evacuated two US Army engineers from a lock and dam they were operating on the Arkansas River near Fort Smith on May 26, as record flooding was reported by the National Weather Service. The NWS said on May 26 that the water had risen to more than 16 feet above the flooding level and was expected to continue rising.
