I released my debut album 'One Way Ticket' in January 2006. By the end of that year I'd completed a bunch of demos set for a follow-up album. My world was shaken by what I can only call a spiritual awakening that took place during the end of 2006 and into the beginning of 2007. All my plans were interrupted as I went through some sort of "reset".
Music dropped into the background as a period of introspection and little activity commenced and things shuffled around into a new harmony and balance, the desire to unite with like-minded souls made itself more strongly known during the years 2007 - 2010. Unable to find these kinds of connections in Edinburgh and online during those years, the pull to continental Europe was getting stronger. It was always on the cards after the first attempt in 2002. A feeling that there may be people and a life waiting there more suitable to the way Kate and I were living.
By the summer of 2010 things began changing quite radically in our lives. Synchronicities and coincidences which eventually led to us leaving everything behind in Edinburgh, putting our belongings into storage and setting off to mainland Europe by the autumn of that year.
Barcelona was the first stop, we flew out from Edinburgh on the morning of 4th October 2010. It felt like life was guiding us so there was no detailed plan. The only feeling was to remain in Barcelona for the foreseeable future and see what would develop. Within days that idea collapsed as our laptop was stolen and we couldn't replace it. So without a laptop, everything changed and after a month we moved onto Paris, and from there another Europe travel adventure was born which saw us move from place to place during the first 5 months before finding some kind of stability. We had always known Music would be at the centre of this eventually but were in no hurry for that - it would come when the time was right. People took priority but that couldn't be forced either. Those first 5 months we were without instruments and soon without a laptop! But we still had a camcorder with which to capture moments of the journey.
So "Planting The Seeds" documents this period, before any songs had been written or recorded as SoulJahm, before SoulJahm even existed. To outsiders it may not have looked like anything significant was happening but to me and Kate, we knew and recognised seeds were being planted during this period as we moved around, from Barcelona eventually landing in Budapest, where SoulJahm was born.
