When personal protective equipment became scarce in March, even in doctors' offices and clinics, the Federal Ministry of Health decided to procure respirators and protective gowns itself. More than 700 contracts were concluded, masks were ordered for around 6.4 billion euros. The process got completely out of hand. "Plusminus" reports on suppliers who are still waiting for their money today or are sitting on millions of ordered masks. More than 50 cases are now pending before the Bonn Regional Court. According to estimates by lawyers, the Federal Ministry of Health could face bills of around 1.5 billion euros from this alone. And these are by no means all the costs of mask procurement. The Federal Ministry of Health's shopping spree is costing taxpayers dearly.
