Donald Trump's farewell speech: 'The movement we started is just beginning'
In his farewell address, President Trump praised his administration's successes in "restoring America." Trump also called for praying for the success of incoming President Joe Biden's administration.
He stated that his administration has restored American strength at home and leadership abroad and "built the greatest economy in the history of the world" as well as achieved "a series of historic peace agreements in the Middle East." He said the U.S. has revitalized its alliances and brought the nations of the world together to stand up to "China" like never before. In doing so, Trump emphasized:
"I am especially proud to be the first president in decades who has not started new wars."
Donald Trump called for praying for the success of the new administration of President-elect Joe Biden. However, the outgoing president also warned that the greatest danger to America is "a loss of confidence in ourselves - a loss of confidence in our national greatness." He declared:
"No nation can long succeed if it loses confidence in its own values, its history and its heroes - for these are the sources of our unity and our joy in life."
Trump commented on the Jan. 6 "attack" on the U.S. Capitol, saying that "all Americans were horrified" and that political violence "is an attack on everything we value as Americans. It can never be tolerated." Democratic Party politicians in particular, however, accused Trump personally of provoking the unrest in the wake of the Jan. 6 Capitol storming.
