Text:
An einem Baum
In dem Park der großen Stadt
Hing unter tausenden Blättern ein Blatt
Sang der Nachtwind in den Bäumen
Wiegte sich das Blatt in Träumen
Von der weiten herrlichen Welt
Könnt ich nur einmal wie der Wind
Fliegen
Mit den Wolken übers Meer
Ach mein Leben gäb ich her
Könnt ich Fliegen!
Bald kam der Herbst
Gab dem Blatt sein schönstes Kleid
Doch es klagte den Wolken sein Leid:
"Bleiben muss ich und verblühen
Könnt ich mit den Schwänen ziehen
Dorthin wo der Sommer nie vergeht..."
Da rief der Herbstwind: "Du sollst fliegen!
Fliegen!"
Und er riss vom Baum das Blatt,
trieb es in die große Stadt,
ließ es fliegen!
Kurz war das Glück
Müde sank das Blatt hinab
Auf die Straße, sein regennasses Grab
Schon am Ende seines Lebens
Rief das kleine Blatt vergebens
Zu den stummen Häusern hinauf:
"Könnt ich nur einmal noch im Wind
Fliegen!
Flög' ich hin zu meinem Baum
Und vergessen wär der Traum
vom Fliegen..."
English translation:
On a tree
In the park of a big city
A leaf hung among thousands of leaves
When the night wind blew through the trees
It rocked the leaf into dreams
Of the wide, wonderful world
If I could only once fly like the wind!
Together with the clouds over the sea
Oh, I would give my life
If I could fly!
Soon autumn came
and dressed the leaf in its most beautiful dress
But it complained to the clouds its suffering:
“I have to stay and fade
If I could fly with the swans
To where the summer never ends ..."
Then the autumn wind called: "You shall fly!
Fly!"
And it ripped the leaf from the tree,
blew it into the big city
and let it fly!
The happiness was brief
The leaf sank down tired
Onto the street, its rain-soaked grave
Already at the end of its life
The little leaf cried in vain
up to the silent houses:
"If I could just one more time in the wind fly!
I would fly to my tree
and forget about the dream
of flying ..."
