Isle of the Dead is mix between point-and-click adventure game and first-person shooter. It was developed by Rainmaker Software and published by Merit Software (in North America) and British company Junkyard (in Europe). A Jaguar CD version was in development, but got cancelled.
A passenger plane crashes on a remote tropical island. All people on board die in the crash, except a passenger called Jake Dunbar. Unfortunately, Jake's problems do not stop with being the only survivor and the plane totally destroyed. The island is infested with countless zombies created by a mad scientist. So Jake has to fight his way through waves of undead and defeat the scientist before having a chance to escape the island. And a girl to rescued is thrown in, for good measure.
The game is first-person shooter for the most part. Maps still consist of rectangular blocks similar to Wolfenstein 3D, and floor and ceiling are also non-textured. At certain spots, the game switches to the adventure mode were you navigate from a first-person view through 2D environments, similar to Legend adventures. You can pick up items, solve puzzles and talk to people. Your inventory can also be accessed in action mode. Unlike most 3D shooters, items like medpaks are not picked up by walking over them, and they are not used automatically. Instead, you pick them up with a command and everything is stored in your inventory. You can use health items any time by entering the inventory and using them.
