President Trump On Border Wall & "Democrat Shutdown" 12/21/18
President trump On Border Wall & "Democrat Shutdown" At the First Step Act Bill Signing. President Trump on Friday scoffed at reports that Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) may be mulling a White House run in 2020. “I thought you were supposed to win before you run for president,” Trump told reporters after meeting with Republican senators to negotiate a government funding bill. The president was congratulating Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) for his victory over O'Rourke, though the campaign was much more competitive than expected.
President Donald Trump is standing by his border sec. demand after some public pressure over the spending bill. Despite his comments last week, Trump is now saying Democrats will be to blame for a shutdown if it happens, and he has publicly encouraged Mitch McConnell to pursue the nuc.. option.
“It’s really up to the Democrats. Totally up to the Democrats as to whether or not we have the shutdown,” he said in comments to reporters today. “It’s possible that we’ll have a shutdown. I would say the chances are probably very good because I don’t think Democrats care so much about maybe this issue, but this is a very big issue.”At issue is $5 Billion in funding the White House is requesting for a border wall that was so central to his run for president. A promise made, but thus far not a promise kept.
After publicly taking credit for a looming government shutdown in a very public Oval Office spat with Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), President Trump once again tried to blame the Congressional Democrats for shutting down the government.
“We need border sec. and the Republicans and the Senate as you know are taking it up today,” Trump said, adding “It’s really up to the Democrats.”
He then added, “Totally up to the Democrats as to whether or not we have the shutdown.”
Later he offered ” I don’t think Democrats care so much about this issue,” and “It’s up to the Democrats.”
He also said, “It’s really the Democrat shut down,” and later, “Now it’s up to the Democrats as to whether or not we have a shutdown tonight.”
