The Pharisees were not honestly seeking information from Yeshua about divorce. They were testing HIM, trying to catch him in some statement about a subject on which they themselves had no agreement and then use it against HIM.
The text from Deuteronomy does not explicitly set out grounds for divorce, Moses recognizes the reality of divorce, that it happens, and so he stipulates that a man who divorces his wife may not remarry her after she remarries. The primary purpose of the command was to protect the wife from arbitrary divorce. A man could not divorce his wife and then accuse her of adultery or claim her back after she remarried. Nor could he remarry her for financial gain if her new husband died.
5 But Yeshua said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment (en to lay = rule). 6 “But from the beginning of creation, GOD CREATED THEM MALE AND FEMALE.7 “FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER, 8 AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH; so they are no longer two, but one flesh. Yeshua quotes HIS own words AS GOD in creation. 9 Therefore, what GOD has joined together, no person is to separate.”
Moses’ permission to divorce was an accommodation to human weakness; their “hearts were hard” σκληροκαρδία sklērokardia = where we get sclerosis, it was for that reason that GOD allowed for divorce. This hard heartedness shows insensitivity to GOD’s purpose resulting in disobedience or rebellion. GOD’s allowance for divorce was to bring order in a society that had disregarded GOD’s standards.
GOD did not intend for marriage to end in divorce. HIS design in creating man and woman was that marriage should be an unbroken, lifelong union. Distinction must be made between what is the absolute will of GOD and what the permissi..
