General Chaos (1993, Mega Drive)

General Chaos is a real-time strategy game developed by Game Refuge and released by Electronic Arts. It was developed for EA's 4 Way Play adapter and thus supports up to four players. The game is about a military conflict between Moronica (whose army is led by General Chaos) and Viceria (forces led by General Havoc). Both parties try to conquer each other's capitol. You start of in an area between both capitols.To conquer an are, you need to win a battle between two squads. If you win a battle, you can choose to invade a bordering area. If you loose, you have to deal with your opponent's attack. Each battle takes place on a single screen. Both sides choose the composition of their squad. You can choose between a squad of five or a duo. The latter others a more direct control. You cannot, however, choose freely which types of soldiers your squad will consist of. There are five types of soldiers, depending on the weapon they use. Each type has different properties in terms of range, firing rate etc. During battle, you can send your soldiers around the battlefield and make them fire all at once. You cannot control their aiming or make them fire individually, so the key to success is positioning them effectively. The battle ends once all soldiers of one side are killed. Injured soldiers can be saved with medic, but the number of medics is limited and carries over between battles. You get more medics by scoring enough points. Sometimes two soldiers engage in weaponless melee combat. In this case, the game switches to a small one-on-one beat'em up game, where you can punch, kick and block.
