Hey kids (of all ages), it's Saturday Morning Cartoon time again!
Well, I went out to do the midnight bed-check at TEOTWAWKI Ranch, and it was actually chilly out there! You know what that means? Time to start easing into the Hallowe'en Spirit.
Filmation animation studios scored one of their most successful and enduring franchises when they licensed Archie, Jughead, and the Riverdale gang from the comic books (see my August 3rd upload). Sabrina the Teenage Witch was imported from the comics to become a popular addition to the ARCHIE SHOW. Soon, she was spun-off into her own show, in an hour-long block she shared with her friends (kin?), cartoon versions of the popular movie monsters. (Drac, Frankie, Wolfie, etc.)
The monsters' half of the show was mostly rapid-fire, free-form comedy in the style of the then-popular LAUGH-IN live-action TV show. The puns and gags were so bad that I suspect the writers were actually competing to come up with the worst ones for each episode. Being in the wake of the MONKEES and the Archies, there are, of course, the requisite bubble-gum musical interludes. Still, it seemed pretty entertaining if you were under eight and/or sufficiently high. (It was only like a year after Woodstock, man!)
So here, from September 1970, is the first episode of GROOVIE GOOLIES.
