SPECTACULAR VINTAGE ADVERTISING | FLORIDA ANTIQUE FEST!
Amazing Antique Advertising! Great Graphic Designs...
We had a viewer request to focus a video on a single collecting category, and our neighbor’s space at the West Palm Beach Antique Fest was filled with beautiful, fun and vivid antique and vintage advertising! I find the art aspect of graphic arts compelling, so I took the opportunity to bring you a glimpse of this nationally recognized dealer’s stock of signs, store displays, ephemera and novelties.
Advertising was high art in the Victorian age, reflected in his stock of century-old trade cards, German die cut calendars and lovely lady trays from Vienna Art Studio. Vivid visuals were the hallmark of early 20th century pieces, and his selection for sale includes a 1930s Libby’s toy grocery store display, a flapper’s 1920s dye cabinet and big signs for popular 1930s sodas.
Advertising ephemera crosses a lot of collecting categories, from kitchenware and bookmarks to paperweights and pinback buttons. An illicit Donald Duck OJ tin bank, Victorian men sporting hipster beards and a Mr. Peanut with a sad story pop up in this video. We also discover that plastic and the Michelin Man are a lot older than expected, and Mt. Rainier is a lot younger!
Naturally, breweriana, automotive, tobacciana and other “man-cave” items are well represented, with striking and colorful beverage and tip trays, tins and other premiums. A large collection of shot glasses you might not have recognized as being pre-Prohibition could help you spot deals at a thrift store or estate sale. Pricing is provided at points along the way to give you a sense of the retail market for these graphic and decorative wares.
A list of other highlights follows below…
I hope showing you how old-time advertising applied art to sell otherwise mundane products helps you learn more about antique and vintage items, and share my encounters with them in the real world. I love sharing our passion and this community, and hope we will all help each other with our antique education.
Here’s some more of what I find:
Store counter jars, oil cans, Hamm’s Beer bear, Victorian tins, license plates, Syroco Wood, pencil toppers, tops, Coca-Cola, poison bottles, Ammo carton, condom tin, antique whiskey jug, bottles, Teddy Roosevelt cigar box, Kellogg’s buttons
