I have long been singing and performing this song, and am happy to share it today. It's a classic by Bruce Cockburn, a great Canadian lyricist and songwriter. It was covered by the Barenaked Ladies (BNL) in the early 90s and made it extremely, quintessentially Canadian in their video, so it's a great introduction to my "Songs for Canada" theme.
As to the song's meaning, Bruce Cockburn wrote it in the midst of the Cold War and under that constant sense of threat and dread. He saw a couple at the park and built the song around the idea of the courage it takes to love in the midst of whatever distressing events are taking place--to choose to be a lover in a dangerous time.
Special thanks to Fr. Darryl Millette for the sound & video. Filmed in Saskatoon, Canada.
