Free Speech Hazard - The 'Say Something Online Act' - The Reform We DON'T Need - Jody Bruchon

This act is an attempt to tackle online drug deals and other crimes that use communication platforms like Facebook as a medium. Unfortunately, it is a draconian mess that will fail to fulfill its purpose and instead result in harm to innocent people, silencing of legitimate speech for fear of prosecution, and effectively forcibly converts large corporations into investigative divisions of the government.

Mandatory reporting laws have noble intentions, but they backfire in several ways, including dragging people who have done nothing wrong into the failing American criminal justice system based on overzealous reporting. The problem stems from the penalties involved with mandatory reporting: if you fail to report, you go to prison, so why wouldn't you report practically everything that could possibly fall under the umbrella and let the authorities sort it all out?
