NPC Meme: A Mirror to Society
Delving behind the NPC meme and the clear real world example in comparison to the traditional definition as below.
In video games, an NPC (non-player character) is any character that is not controlled by a player. These characters are under the control of the game itself, rather than being directly manipulated by a player. The term originated in traditional tabletop role-playing games, where it referred to characters controlled by the gamemaster or referee instead of other players. In video games, NPCs can take on various roles within the game world:
Supporting Cast: NPCs often serve as the “supporting cast” or “extras” of a roleplaying narrative. While player characters (PCs) are the protagonists, NPCs populate the fictional world and can fill any role not occupied by a player character. They might be allies, bystanders, competitors, or traders within the game.
Behaviour and AI: NPCs have predetermined sets of behaviours that impact gameplay. However, their actions are not necessarily the result of true artificial intelligence. Some NPCs may have complete game statistics and backstories, while others are described more briefly.
Temporary Control: In certain situations, players may temporarily take control of an NPC. This can happen when a player’s character is unable to act (due to injury or other reasons) or when a player doesn’t have a character within the group. Temporarily controlling NPCs provides players with a different perspective on the game’s plot.
Dependents: Game systems often include rules for characters having positive allies in the form of NPC followers, hired hands, or dependents. Players may be involved in designing, recruiting, or developing these NPCs.
Remember, NPCs are not hostile toward players; hostile characters are typically referred to as enemies, mobs, or creeps. So next time you encounter an NPC in a game, know that they’re part of the game’s rich tapestry, even if they’re not directly under your control!
