Florida --- Volusia Sheriff's Office --- Deputy-involved shooting: 5/12/20.
Body camera and Air One video footage of this week’s deputy-involved shooting of an armed suspect in Deltona after a traffic stop conducted on Gregory Howe by a DeLand police officer.
After Howe flees the traffic stop, the video transitions to footage recorded by the Sheriff’s Office Air One helicopter, followed by footage from two deputies who were involved and had body cameras recording during the incident.
At this point in the investigation of the shooting, based on physical evidence, witness accounts and video, we believe Howe leveled a Kel-Tec KSG tactical shotgun at deputies and fired one time.
Howe’s shotgun was recovered from inside his truck and was discovered to have been loaded with 13 rounds, 1 of which had been discharged.
During the approximately 10 seconds of gunfire, four deputies fired 82 times, striking Howe multiple times and resulting in fatal injury.
UPDATE: Gregory Howe was struck 14 times, and it was a shot to the head that killed the 37-year-old veteran in the driveway of his home at 501 Haversham Road, the sheriff said.
Chitwood said he believes that Howe only fired one round because one of the shots fired by deputies struck Howe’s hand and the shotgun.
Adkins has previously been involved in two other fatal shootings, both of which occurred in Deltona. In March 2017, Adkins fatally shot Daniel Donarski after Donarski pointed a shotgun at deputies. In June 2017, Adkins fatally shot Jose Guillermo Flores Colon after Colon attacked him and took the deputy’s Taser. The FDLE cleared Adkins in both shootings.
Officials also have confirmed that Howe was the suspect in the shooting of a woman in Orange City on April 26, Chitwood said. The gun used in that shooting is believed to be the .40-caliber firearm that Daytona Beach police found in Howe’s car when he was arrested on May 1
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s investigation of the shooting is ongoing. Again, all the information provided by the Sheriff’s Office is preliminary and based on the information available at this time, prior to us interviewing the deputies involved.
