Been a very productive couple days. Felt like quickly whipping this up after working out for a while. It's that one System Shock 1 song everyone knows for sounding like a NIN song, but I never got into listening to them outside of the Quake OST, so I wouldn't know.

The other day, I found a whole second version of the soundtrack for the classic DOS arcade mech game Iron Blood. And I immediately got the thought to try mixing the alternate versions of the same tracks together.

Had a fiddle with this at about 1 or 2 am, fucked it up severely by forgetting to amplify the very quiet CD Rip audio, and didn't save the project files; so I had another go at it this morning from scratch.

This was a complete nightmare:
My assumption is that the AWE32 render of the song was played by someone *through* a PC with an AWE32 and *then* patched through another computer to record, giving it a consistent speed. However, the Soundblaster version of the song has an inconsistent time signature, which I'm assuming is from essentially recording the sound Audacity-style while playing, meaning it speeds up and slows down in tandem with the framerate.

I really really want to do my other favourite track from this OST, the song for Stages 6&7, but that song has the inconsistent speed EVEN WORSE than this one did and would probably take 5 or 6 times as long to do.

This is an extremely weird circumstance.
This rendition of this song is a gamerip from the Skulldash Expanded Edition mod by Joshua 'Dragonfly' O'Sullivan.
It just so happens though that it's a rendition of a song from the BattleTanx OST.
*But*, there's a couple ports of that game, and so I don't know which version is more accurately represented.

I discovered very recently that Maximum Action separated from New Blood Interactive over creative differences.
From what I could piece together, Memelord Dave wanted the game to be a John Woo/Max Payne simulator, to the exclusion of how the developer wanted to reflect the slower parts of 80s action movies as well.

An unfortunate side-effect of this is that all of the music Hunter J. Pierce had made for it was taken down from pretty much everywhere, because he works for New Blood. So a good half-dozen songs from the Maximum Action OST are now almost lost music.

I went deep down a nostalgia rabbithole to scour the internet for a lost Apple Macintosh Shmup from my childhood.
What's more, I actually managed to find a working, "registered" copy of the Windows port after over a decade of searching.

Deimos Rising is utter abandonware, made by Ambrosia Software as a sequel to their hit Mars Rising.
Ambrosia's form of DRM (a sort of generated license that was time-sensitive) means it couldn't be brought to any modern storefronts. Due to this, and due to Ambrosia disappearing and their website and storefront no longer existing, you cannot obtain a legal copy anymore.

Hell, the registration executable doesn't even work on a modern system, even if you do download the Trial and managed to get your hands on an original owner's License (I did, and wasn't willing to go to the hassle of setting up a Mac OS 8.6 or Win98 virtual machine just for this).

I pulled this directly from the game's paks, and then exported it in as consistent of a 320k file as I could.
This is as close to uncompressed as I could get it from the original file, and I can't notice a difference in my cans between playing it raw and playing the MP3.

I went looking for a link of this theme song to share in Discord, because I enjoy bombing music channels with videogame OSTs. The only good Arachno render I could find (from the Arachno Soundcloud account, no less) was fairly raw with no real post-processing on the instruments.

I went down a nostalgia rabbithole for Tekken and managed to grab a Tekken 3 OST.
Sadly, there's not much I can do about the fuzz in the Arcade version of the song without gimping the quality altogether. I didn't find an XA converter that *doesn't* introduce that hiss, and I couldn't find a player that JUST plays the XAs so I can record them. For all I know, it's an intentional part of the track, because I swear some of the Arcade songs don't have the hiss.

How I got to even mixing this is a rambling story in and of itself involving the SNES Jurassic Park soundtrack, so I'll just skip that shit and get to the Super Metroidy bit:

I got my hands on the Super Metroid music files, and an interestingly tweakable SPC player for Foobar2000. This was one of the first things I tried out, and noticed that the song, when played with Interpolation set to "None", had a much rougher and grungier and more Metal quality to it.

Several differently interpolated recordings of Brinstar (Red Soil), some down-to-the-sample wave matching, and a bit of editing later, and we've got what I think is an interestingly darker and more full-bodied mix of the song.

I found out that the MIDIs for Prodeus' Soundtrack are free. Right there, on Steam. Don't even have to own the game to download them. Pretty easy what to pick for Arachnifying fodder while I'm bored.

Today, we're doing something a little ambitious. I felt like ripping some art from Ashes: Enriched Edition to use as wallpapers, and decided to take all the music while I was there.
Five hours; some renamed files, some added metadata, some searching around for old gameplay videos for specific referencing, one text document, a MEGA upload, a shitload of OGGs imported into Audacity and exported as MP3s, a bunch of Premiere Pro tinkering, and a custom thumbnail using the mod's own Font PNGs later:
