4th Grade Math 3.2, Estimate Products of Factors with 2-digits

We can use strategies to estimate products. We can round each factor to the greatest place value, which is the place value farthest to the left. We can also use compatible numbers. We review the rounding rules to round to a certain place value. Compatible numbers are friendly numbers, they're easy to compute mentally. We solve several word problems involving estimating products. We see the difference of rounding to the nearest 10, compared to using compatible numbers. We give some examples of why it's better for us to estimate in some situations than find exact answers. If the rounded factors are greater than the actual factors, the estimate will be greater than the exact answer and we will overestimate. If the rounded factors are less than the actual factors, the estimate will be less than the exact answer and we will underestimate. If one rounded factor is greater, and another rounded factor is less than the actual factors, the estimate will be close to the exact answer. We find two possible factors for a given estimated product.
