Colin Flaherty: Black Football Team Riots After Losing to White Kids. Attacks Band Members and Fans

Almont defeated Detroit Denby, 36-8, in an MHSAA Division 5 football semifinal Saturday after referees called the game because of excessive personal fouls.
As players were exiting the field at Walled Lake Central High School, tension escalated as players and fans were shouting, and some Denby players were seen going up a ramp toward the platform where fans were milling and reportedly heard racial slurs.
While the Raiders gathered in the end zone, two Oakland County Sheriff's Department officers took the field as Denby exited and returned to its locker room. Denby left the field at the same time as some members of Almont's band, which was repeatedly chanting, 'Hard work!' The chant, members of the band say, is a tribute to the saying made famous by Floyd Mayweather and something it has been chanting all season long. Almont band member Trevor Forsythe said on Twitter a Denby player shoved him during those chants, igniting a bigger shoving match near the northwest end.
Following that shoving incident, Denby players said some Almont fans starting hurling racial slurs at them. Some players claimed the Almont fans began spitting on them and throwing food at them. Some of the football players retaliated by throwing helmets and shoes at the Almont fans. Several Denby players also retaliated by climbing the fence that separated the fans from the playing field.
"You could see fans throwing stuff and spitting at them," said Karl Foster, whose son, Karl Foster III, plays for Denby. "During the game, we could hear chants, 'Put leashes on those monkeys.' "
