WHITNEY HOUSTON - LIVE IN RIO (1994 CONCERT)
Whitney Elizabeth Houston (August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012) was an American singer and actress.
Nicknamed "The Voice", she is one of the bestselling music artists of all time, with over 200 million records sold worldwide.
In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked her second on their list of the greatest singers of all time.
Houston influenced many singers in popular music, and was known for her powerful, soulful vocals and vocal improvisation skills.
She is the only artist to have had seven consecutive number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100, from "Saving All My Love for You" in 1985 to "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" in 1988.
Whitney also enhanced her popularity upon entering the movie industry, making her acting debut with "The Bodyguard" (1992). She recorded six songs for the film's soundtrack, including "I Will Always Love You" which won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year and became the best-selling physical single by a woman in music history.
However, her personal problems began to overshadow her career by 1993. Her albums began to receive mixed reviews, while her drug use and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown received widespread media coverage.
Houston returned to the top of the Billboard 200 chart with her final studio album, "I Look to You (2009)", but it was too late for her career and health status.
On February 11, 2012, Houston accidentally drowned in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, with heart disease and cocaine use as contributing factors.
Her life and career were dramatised in the 2022 biopic "I Wanna Dance with Somebody".
In 1994, while on her "The Bodyguard Tour", Whitney performed for the first time in Brazil.
Her two concerts, one in São Paulo and another in Rio de Janeiro, for the Hollywood Rock Event were sold out.
She also performed "I Will Always Love You" at the Closing Ceremony for the 1994 World Cup.
