It's a Long Way to Mukumbura - Rhodesian Patriotic Song
Song was made by Mike Westscott in 1977 on the album "It's a Long Way to Mukumbura / All Shook Up"
The Rhodesian Bush War was a conflict between the White-Led Republic of Rhodesia supported by South Africa and Marxist-Leninist terrorists led by Robert Mugabe and supported by China and the Warsaw Pact as well as Israel.
The Jewel of Africa was crushed, and replaced by a corrupt, economically weak and mismanaged "Zimbabwe" that supported attacks against white farmers, leading to hundreds injured and thousands fleeing the once prosperous country.
Lyrics:
It's a long way to Mukumbura
It's a long way to jawl
It's a long way from your hometown
But you can have yourself a ball
With your mukkas
Goodbye Bulawayo, tot siens Cecil Square
It's a long, long way to Mukumbura And we're going up there to stir
It's a long way to JOC Inyanga
It's a long way, ek se
It's a long way from Umtali
But it's wide tar all the way
Well, nearly
Goodbye to the Cecil
Hello the Mont Claire
It's a long, long way to JOC Inyanga
And the crowd's fighting there
It's a long way to Kariba
It's a long way to run
It's a long way from Mukute
But you can do it on your THUMB
With your FN
We love our Sergeant Major, when he drives it on RL
When he takes us on the bush road It's just like going to
Heaven, I'm in Heaven
It's a long way to Llewelyn
It's a long way on the train
We can kwai it to the North Pole, But they'd build one just the same
The parade square
We all dig the stoppies, haircuts and the graze
And if we really scheme it's lekker when we start on our first phase
“Mukkas” is South African/Afrikaans slang for “friends”, they also of course mention many towns of significance to the Rhodies (many of which were hosts to battles, like Mukumbura, Umtali, the Montclair hotel, etc)... “ek se” is Afrikaans for “I say”, “tot siens” is Afrikaans for “goodbye”, JOC Inyanga refers to the Rhodesian Joint Operations Center in Inyanga, “wide tar” is a type of road category in Rhodesia (and now Occupied Rhodesia, I will not call it Zimbabwe) indicating at least a two-lane road, FN is the ubiquitous FN FAL rifle used by the Rhodies... the “stoppies” were all the stops made along the way by the Rhodies, getting haircuts and graze (food) along the way, and “lekker” is slang for good or great.
