Also known as "Der Wachtposten" (The Sentry). A sad soldier's song from the First World War, written by Hans Heim (lyrics) and Götz Höhne (music).
Artists: Vier Richters Gesangs-Gitarristen; recorded: 1935.
Text:
Es stand nachts auf einsamem Posten,
ein Infanterist auf der Wacht.
Der Schnee fing an zu fallen,
es war die Weihnachtsnacht.
Er denkt verträumt an die Heimat,
wie mag es wohl dorten sein?
"Ach Vater, Mutter, Schwester,
und du Herzliebste mein!
Gott grüß' euch, ihr Lieben, ihr alle,
im Geiste bin ich bei euch.
Wenn einsam ich hier falle ...",
da hört er ein leises Geräusch.
Er packt mit den eiskalten Händen,
so krampfhaft fest sein Gewehr,
Kein Mond, kein Stern am Himmel,
der Schnee fällt dicht und schwer.
Da krachte ein Schuß und der Posten,
er droht mit Blut dem Schnee.
Die bitterste Not mußt' er kosten,
lieb Heimatland ade.
Ein Kreuz zeigt hoch oben am Berge,
wo die Patrouille ihn fand.
Gott gebe dir ewigen Frieden,
du starbst für das Vaterland!

English translation:
One night there stood on guard
a lonely infantryman.
The snow started falling,
it was Christmas night.
He thinks dreamily of home,
what might it be like there?
"Oh father, mother, sister,
and you, my dearest love!
God may greet you, dear ones, all of you,
I am with you in my mind,
if I die here lonely, ...",
suddenly he hears a quiet noise.
He grabs with his ice-cold hands,
his rifle convulsively tight,
No moon, no star in the sky,
the snow falls thick and heavy.
Then a shot rang out and
the sentry's blood dripped into the snow.
He had to taste the bitterest hardship.
Dear homeland goodbye.
High up on the mountain a cross points,
where the patrol found him.
May God grant you eternal peace,
you died for the fatherland!
