WOODWORKING….MAKING A DECORATIVE DOUGH BOWL WITHOUT CHISELS.

My wife has always admired those large wooden dough bowls at those expensive kitchen supply stores at our local malls. I’ve seen many between $100.00 and $150.00. That being said , although I’m an experienced amateur woodworker, I have never mastered wood carving with chisels. In fact I’m not sure where to begin with those very expensive chisels!
The challenge was met with a very simple ( but dangerous) carving wheel I recently purchased at my local woodworkers supply store. To be honest, if you take all the safety precautions necessary, an experienced woodworker can manage this equipment as long as you practice safety, safety and then more SAFETY! The secret to this wheel is making sure that you use VERY LIGHT PASSES as the wheel can get away from you if you don’t. IF YOU PLAN ON MAKING ONE OF THESE BOWLS, PLEASE, PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL! THIS IS NOT A TOOL FOR A NOVICE. I WOULD SUGGEST YOU PRACTICE EXTENSIVELY BEFORE ATTEMPTING YOU FINAL CARVE!
The finish is a simple whitewash with 2 coats of satin water based polyurethane. The total cost to me was $0.00 as I used a scrap piece of 2x12 left over from an old project. The time it took was about 5 hours to complete excluding drying time. My bowl’s dimensions are 9 inches wide by 30 inches long and 3 inches tall. You can adjust the size to whatever fits your needs. Please be very careful if you will attempt this project. It is inherently dangerous if you don’t know how to use the carving wheel!
