German version of the Scottish folk song "Macpherson's Lament". Jamie Macpherson (1675-1700) was a Scottish outlaw who is the subject of many legends. He was the illegitimate son of a Highland laird, Macpherson of Invereshie, and a gypsy girl. The Lord acknowledged the child and raised him in his home. After the death of his father, the child returned to his mother's clan. As an adult, he became the leader of his clan. Macpherson had drawn the enmity of many wealthy lairds, most notably Duff of Braco from Banff. When Macpherson and his men stormed Banff market, he was arrested and hanged on November 16, 1700. It is alleged that at the time of Macpherson's execution a pardon was en route to Banff. Duff is said to have set the village clock 15 minutes early in order to carry out the death sentence earlier, before the pardon arrived.
While imprisoned prior to execution, Macpherson is said to have composed the song now known as "Macpherson's Lament". He is said to have been unusually strong, and also an excellent swordsman and violinist. The Clan Macpherson Museum in Newtonmore houses the remains of Macpherson's violin (02:02) as well as his sword (00:46).
