English translation below. A song from the German federal youth movement, created in the late 1920s, also known as "Death roars in the Curonian forests". Words and music: schorse (Georg Zierenberg, 1911-1963), a songwriter from the Nerother Wanderervogel. The song is about the Baltic Army (Landeswehr), which fought in the Latvian War of Independence from 1918 to 1920.
The Landeswehr consisted largely of German-Baltic volunteers. It was mainly used together with German free corps associations against Bolshevik and Red Army troops. After the Republic of Latvia, which had been established in 1920, signed a peace treaty with Soviet Russia, the Baltic States Army was absorbed into the armed forces of Latvia. The song refers to the capital of Latvia, Riga, which was conquered on May 22, 1919 by the Landeswehr together with German Freikorps associations.

Text:
Der Tod stöhnt in den kurischen Wäldern
und müde marschiert unsere Kompanie.
Durch Nebel und Regen über die Felder
dröhnt donnernd die Pauke der Artillerie.
Refrain.
English translation:
Death groans in the Curonian forests
and our regiment marches wearily.
Through fog and rain across the fields
roars thundering the kettle drum of the artillery.
Chorus:
The horror and laughter is burned in us
in the fires of a hundred skirmishes.
We only knew enemies all around
in the back, on the left, on the right.
In vain all the graves back there in the east,
We retreat on endless paths.
We fight on lost posts
abandoned by God and abandoned by luck.
Courland's earth thunders of gray convoys,
Companions, then ride into Riga.
And if the last battle is still won
then the dead will be victorious.
