Über meiner Heimat Frühling - German Hiking Song
English below. Juni 1907 in Stuttgart; † 31.

Written by Eberhard Koebel (also known by his trip name "tusk"). It is one of the best-known travel songs that have their origins in the German youth movement. Published in October 1933 in Koebel's magazine "Die Kiefer", the melody in 1934 in the song book "Soldier Choirs of the Icebreaker Team". In addition to the author's prominence, the song owes its great popularity to its content: romance, wanderlust and the recurring motif of the lonely, wild Nordlands (Scandinavia) The melody, a song of the Kuban Cossacks, underlines with its peculiar alternation between major and minor the yearning mood of the text. The text line "I like to give all roses against Nordland's stones" is supposed to be a swipe against Theo Hohenadel (trip name: gari), who, as a rose grower, preferred to go to a flower fair in France instead of a large Lapland trip.
Eberhard Koebel (before 1934 Köbel), (born June 22, 1907 in Stuttgart, † August 31, 1955 in Berlin) was a German author, ornithologist and founder of the German (autonomous) youth group of November 1, 1929 (dj.1.11). He significantly influenced the German youth movement and civil resistance against the National Socialists. He was fascinated by Northern Europe, especially Lapland, from a trip to Lapland he also brought his trip name tusk (the German), which the locals had given him.
Text:
Über meiner Heimat Frühling
Seh ich Schwäne nordwärts fliegen.
Ach, mein Herz möcht sich auf
grauen Eismeerwogen wiegen.
Schwan im Singsang deiner Lieder
Grüß die grünen Birkenhaine.
Alle Rosen gäb ich gerne
Gegen Nordlands Steine.
Grüße Schweden, weißer Vogel!
Setz an meiner statt die Füße
Auf den kalten Fels der Ostsee;
Sag ihr meine Grüße!
Grüß das Eismeer, grüß das Nordkap!
Sing den Schären zu, den Fjorden;
Wie ein Schwan sei meine Seele
Auf dem Weg nach Norden.
Über meiner Heimat Frühling
Seh ich Schwäne nordwärts fliegen.
Ach, mein Herz möcht sich auf grauen
Eismeerwogen wiegen.

English translation:
Over my home land's spring
I see swans flying north
Alas, my heart longs to be cradled
By grey arctic waves
Swan, in the sing-song
Of your songs
Salute the the green birch groves
All the roses I would gladly trade
For the north-country's rocks
Salute Sweden, white bird,
Set foot in my place
On the cold rocks of the Baltic Sea
Tell her my greetings
Salute the Arctic Ocean, salute the North Cape!
Sing to the archipelago, the fjords;
Let my soul be like a swan
On the way to the north
Over my home land's spring
I see swans flying north
Alas, my heart longs to be cradled
By grey arctic waves
