And as you read in the Longevity Paradox book, your gut buddies also benefit when you exercise and repay you by fixing up their home. They especially like it when you exercise against gravity because this stresses - and therefore strengthens - more of your muscles.

HIIT for Fun - Another exercise option that provides big benefits for a small investment of time is high-intensity interval training (HIIT).

HIIT burns more fat for longer than traditional exercise does. Plus, whereas traditional aerobic exercise can weaken the immune system, HIIT doesn’t have that effect. As little as ten minutes of HIIT three times a week can confer a variety of health benefits, especially for those who were previously inactive. So if you’ve been waiting for an excuse to start a new exercise routine, here it is.

HIIT is also a highly enjoyable form of exercise. In fact, research shows that it elicits greater feelings of happiness than traditional forms of moderate-intensity exercise do because it leads to greater neurotransmitter release. And of course, as you know well by now, your gut buddies are the ones producing the precursors to serotonin and other “happy-making” hormones, so it’s safe to say that they enjoy HIIT, too!

On the Longevity Paradox program, I recommend doing a ten-minute HIIT routine three times a week in addition to your five-minute daily circuit.

Exercise plan:
20 second warm-up: Jog in Place
20 second warm-up: Jumping Jacks

25 seconds rest between each exercise

30 seconds: Push-ups
30 seconds: Jumping Squats
30 seconds: Bicycle Crunches
30 seconds: Knees-to-chest Push-ups
30 seconds: Run in place
30 seconds: Tik-tok Plank
30 seconds: Squats & Towel pull
30 seconds: Burpees
30 seconds: Posterior Plank
30 seconds: V-crunches in & out

The Advanced five-minute exercise plan from the Longevity Paradox book incorporates movements that you’ll recognize for a complete, well-rounded workout that provides the amount of stress your muscles need to stay strong and prevent wasting, or loss of muscle mass with age.

You have no excuse to avoid doing this. Start off by completing this circuit twice a day or whenever you feel the need to get up and get moving, especially if you spend a large portion of your day sitting. It will give you an instant burst of energy while strengthening all the muscles - and cells - in your body.

Exercise plan:
